Google AI Studio’s Build mode has rolled out GitHub repo import with auto-deploy, collapsing the distance between “I have a codebase” and “it’s running in production.” Until recently, most AI builders asked you to paste code fragments into a chat and trust the model to reconstruct your architecture from memory — a guessing game where a lot of promising demos quietly fell apart.
The new flow flips that script: point Build at a real repository, it ingests the actual code, and then it ships the thing. Operating on ground truth instead of snippets tends to produce apps that survive first contact — fewer hallucinated file trees, fewer missing dependencies, more working software.
Auto-deploy closes the last mile. The promise of these tools was always “describe it and get software,” but hosting, wiring, and going live were exactly where momentum died. Handing that off to the same surface where you built it lowers the bar for solo developers and small teams who would rather not babysit CI at 2 a.m.
For the ecosystem, it’s another sign the workspace is eating the toolchain: the deploy button is migrating straight into the editor.
